  • Build and coordinate a coalition of ambassadors or individuals interested in the above objectives and enthusiastic about eradicating poverty in Nigeria and across the 36 states of Nigeria including the F.C.T.

AGRICULTURE AND ALLIED SECTORS

According to IFAD, Poor rural women and men depend on agriculture: 70 per cent of rural people are subsistence smallholder farmers, who produce some 90 per cent of Nigeria’s food on un-irrigated plots wholly dependent on rainfall. RHI is focusing on households in the rural areas to increase their agricultural production and diversify their incomes in response to livelihoods challenges faced by many farming households in the rural areas of Nigeria.

HARNESSING LOCAL SKILLS AND SKILLS ACQUISITION

Unemployment is a major challenge in Nigeria, according to National Bureau of Statistics about 29.7% of Nigerian youths are currently unemployed, with majority of them coming from rural areas. Technical and vocational skills enhancement is one of the major issues that should be taken into account in addressing the informal economy. RHI is working towards skill development and value chain integration of skills acquisition in rural communities.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Impending dangers of climate change necessitate mitigation measures to overcome the ill effects; However Renewable energy is being championed as a potentially significant new source of jobs and rural growth, Renewable Energy provides remote rural regions with the opportunity to produce their own energy (electricity and heat in particular), rather than depending on conventional energy which is almost non-existent at the rural areas. Being able to generate reliable and cheap energy can trigger economic development. RHI is building innovative market based models in the energy sector for lasting impact.

WATER & NUTRITION

Water is an essential input in crop and livestock production, water scarcity is a feature of many rural livelihood realities, the lack of adequate water is linked to poverty – households facing water shortages are more likely to be poor or fall into poverty than households not facing such shortages. Access to water on rural farm land is one of the impediments to increased agricultural produce at the rural areas also the availability of water closer to home, for example, reduces the need for women and girls to travel long distances to collect it – a common chore, which has been proven to expose them to harm. RHI is working in efficient water use scenarios and innovative models to increase access to clean water at the household level.
